Study shows 10 million Brits are drink driving

Friday, October 16, 2015

A new study found that up to 10 million British drivers may be drink driving. This is most commonplace among the under 50s where 36% of drivers who drink admit to drink-driving - equivalent to 6.5 million drivers. One fifth (20%) of drivers in their 30s believe they can safely drive after 6 or 7 glasses of wine or beer.

The study finds that as drivers get older and gain experience they are less likely to drink-drive but even among over 50s who drink one third 24% (or equivalent to 3.6 million drivers) admit to driving while over the limit. While a fifth (19%) of over 50s believe their alcohol tolerance is better than when they were younger.

Two fifths (40%) of those who drove over the limit suffered serious consequences such as falling asleep at the wheel, crashing or losing their licence.

The survey of 2000 motorists was conducted by insurance company RIAS.
