Study shows women now drink nearly as much as men

Women are drinking nearly as much as men according to a new study spanning over 100 years of global drinking patterns.

The researchers looked at 68 previous studies and found that men born between 1991-1910 were 2.2 times more likely to drink than the same age women. However, men born between 1991-2000 were only 1.1 times more likely to drink than the same age women showing that women had almost caught up in the amount they are drinking.

Here in the UK, experts blamed what they described as a booming 'wine o'clock' culture where women will drink cheap wine at home in the evenings.

The study was led by Australia's University of New South Wales and New York's Columbia University.
