Drinking wine from larger glasses leads people to drink more

Tuesday, June 07, 2016

A new study shows that serving wine in larger glasses encourages people to drink more. Researchers from the University of Cambridge and University of Bristol examined drinking habits over 16 weeks with similar volumes of wine served in different size glasses. When served in larger glasses 9.4% more wine was purchased compared to a standard size glass.

Increasing the size of the glass even without increasing the amount of wine led people to drink more. The cause is uncertain to the researchers but may be because the larger glass changes the drinkers perception so they drink faster and order more.

The opposite effect was not recorded when switching to serving the same volume in smaller glasses.
