New legislation came into effect in the Republic of Ireland last week.  First-time drink-driving offenders will now be automatically banned from driving for three months if caught with between 50 – 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood (mg/100mL BAC) - equivalent to 0.22 - 0.35 milligrams of alcohol per litre of breath (mg/L BrAC).  

The annual Police Powers and Procedures Report, published on 25 October, shows that just 325,887 breath tests were carried out in 2017. This is a fall of 15% over the previous year and the lowest number since the data has been collected.

Government Drink Drive Campaign Budget Slashed

Monday is Back to School day across the country, but new analysis suggests 200,000 mothers could be driving their children to school with alcohol in their system.

Final estimates for 2016 show that between 220 and 250 people were killed in accidents in Great Britain where at least one driver or rider was over the drink-drive limit, with a central estimate of 230 deaths.
