Description

AlcoSense Ultra
Fuel Cell Breathalyser

Supplied with 100 Mouthpieces worth £40
and carry case worth £10

If you’re looking for the ultimate personal breathalyzer – we think you’ve found it. The culmination of 3 years of research and development, the AlcoSense Ultra take accuracy, features and ease of use to a new level.

Ultra at a glance:

  • 200mm2 Fuel Cell Sensor – same as several UK, EU & US Police sensors
  • More than twice as accurate as award winning AlcoSense Elite
  • Selectable database of all drink drive limits worldwide
  • Download results to your PC
  • Blow Coach making it extremely easy to use
  • Winner – 2016 Red Dot Product Design Award

Designed from the ground up by AlcoSense in the UK with Patented new features, the Ultra packs the punch of a breathalyzer twice its price and brings near Police accuracy into the reach of the consumer.

Police Pedigree

The AlcoSense Ultra is the first consumer breathalyzer in the world to use the same 200mm² professional fuel cell alcohol sensor as several UK, US & European Police Breathalyzers.

Professional Sampling System with Temperature Compensation

The AlcoSense Ultra uses a professional grade sampling system to ensure that only deep lung air (the most accurate part of the breath) is measured by the sensor. It uses professional grade sensors to measure the blow pressure, flow rate and volume of breath exhaled and takes a reading when 1 litre of air has been exhaled, ensuring the most accurate sample is always taken. To improve accuracy even further, readings are fine-tuned according to temperature. These sensors also allow the Ultra to get clever with BlowCoach™

Memory Recall & PC Connectivity

The AlcoSense Ultra will store 128 results in its on-board memory with date and time stamps, using USB and AlcoSense’s software (click here for the software) the results can be downloaded to your Windows PC for analysis and record keeping.

BlowCoach™

Most issues while doing a breath test are caused by either blowing too hard, too soft or not for long enough, and with some products this can also cause inaccurate results. BlowCoach™ is a Patent Pending technology from AlcoSense which makes it simple to do the perfect test every time!

The Ultra shows you real-time on screen feedback of how you’re blowing. All you need to do is keep the top pressure bar in the middle, and keep blowing until the bottom volume bar is full.

Blowing too softly Blowing at too softly
Blowing correctly Blowing correctly

Should you get it wrong, this is where the Ultra gets really clever. Using it’s on board sensors the Ultra diagnoses exactly why the test failed and gives you tailored tips so you can quickly get it right next time.

Blowing too hard

BlowCoach™ dramatically reduces the learning curve of using a breathalyzer and makes operation simple.

Eliminating Under-Reading

Every breathalyzer has an accuracy tolerance of +/- X.XX of the reading – the smaller the number the more accurate the breathalyzer claims to be. The AlcoSense Ultra has some clever software to eliminate the downside – i.e. instead of having a tolerance of +/-0.10‰BAC, the AlcoSense Ultra’s tolerance is +0.07‰BAC, -0.00‰BAC. This means the Ultra will read a little on the safe side, not too low and more three times as accurately as the award-winning AlcoSense Elite.

Any Limit in the World – Literally

At a click of button the AlcoSense Ultra will work with any limit, anywhere in the world! Just select the country/region you’re driving in from the menu and using AlcoSense’s patent pending technology the Ultra sets every up for you according to the local legislation. It sets the limit, unit of measure and blood breath conversion ratio to allow accurate readings in either blood alcohol or breath alcohol. Should a limit change the unit can be updated through a software download from our support section. Ideal for cross border or even cross continent travel.

AlcosenseUltra choose country

If you want to set your own self-imposed limit, for example maybe half the drink drive limit, you can do that too! Just select “Limit” from the main menu to adjust it to the limit you desire.

Award Winning Product Design

The AlcoSense Pro and Ultra won the prestigious 2016 Red Dot Award for Product Design. The Red Dot Design Award is an international product design prize awarded by the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany. In 2016, a total of 5,216 products were assessed for the award by a jury of 41 independent design professionals. Past winners of the award include Apple in 2001, BMW in 2007, LG in 2008, Porsche Design in 2012, Lenovo in 2013, Bose in 2014 and Dell in 2015. You can find out more by clicking here.

Red Dot Design Award Winner 2016

From the ground up, the product design communicates the AlcoSense Ultra's core values of simplicity and precision.

Detailed, Easy to Understand Results

AlcoSense Ultra features a full colour 1.8 inch (48mm) TFT screen which gives clear and detailed readings of your alcohol level in your choice of breath (mg/L or µg/100mL) or blood (%BAC or ‰BAC) readings. If you’re close to or over your chosen limit the Ultra will alert you not to drive.

No alcohol No alcohol
Up to 80% of the limit Up to 80% of the limit
Close to or over limit Close to or over limit

Time Until Sober & Retest Alarm

AlcoSense Ultra will even calculate how long it may take until you’ll be sober and show it with your results, see screen shots above and below. Want to have a reminder to re-test again later? No problem, just press the alarm icon and the Ultra will alert you to retest again later.

Sober in time shown with results, press the bell icon to set a re-test reminder Sober in time shown with results, press the bell icon to set a re-test reminder
Easily adjust when the timer will remind you to re-test Easily adjust when the timer will remind you to re-test

Backlit “Twin” Blow Tube Receptor

The Ultra features a backlit blow tube receptor so it’s easy to put a blow tube even in low light. The Ultra works with both the “Pro” mouthpieces which feature a one-way valve to eliminate contamination from previous tests for ultimate accuracy, or the “regular” blow tubes used by the AlcoSense Lite and Elite.

Ultra Backlit

Re-Calibration Alert

Any breathalyzer requires re-calibration after a period of use, the AlcoSense Ultra has an industry leading calibration period of 12 months from the first time you use it. To improve reliability and user friendliness AlcoSense Ultra reminds you to recalibrate after 11 months of use. When calibration expires just post it to us and we will recalibrate it using Police spec Breath Alcohol Simulators and return it to you within 5 working days.

Temperature Alerts

If a breathalyzer is used outside its operating temperatures you can get erroneous readings due to temperature affecting the quality of the reaction inside the sensor. For your safety and protection AlcoSense Ultra will alert you if the unit goes outside its operating range (note the operating temperature is the temperature of the unit, not the surrounding air temperature) of 5°C~40°C. This means that, unlike rival brands, the Ultra will never let you perform a test when you could get an unreliable result.

Saturation Protection

Unlike rival brands, AlcoSense Ultra also protects you from inaccuracy caused by “Sensor Saturation”. Sensor Saturation can affect any breathalyzer, including Police units and is caused when extremely high levels of alcohol are blown directly into the sensor. Normally this happens when a breath test is performed shortly after drinking when alcohol is still present in the mouth, and the sensor becomes overloaded, known as “saturation”. Readings taken after a saturation event can be unreliable until the sensor recovers. For your safety and protection, rather than allowing potentially unreliable readings to be shown, AlcoSense Ultra will enter a protection mode which allows the sensor to recover before allowing further tests.

Quality & Reliability Assured

The AlcoSense Ultra is manufactured under ISO13485 conditions, the benchmark in medical device quality systems. After calibration, each unit is then tested 3 times for accuracy before leaving the factory meaning that the Ultra is a device you can rely on.

"The AlcoSense Pro and Ultra have been awarded the international distinction of the Red Dot Award for exceptional product design against competition from multinationals including, Dell, Lenovo, LG, Apple, Logitech and many more. A total of 5,214 products from 57 nations were assessed by a jury of 41 independent designers, design professors and specialist journalists to decide the winners of the 2016 Red Dot Product Design Award, with the AlcoSense Pro and Ultra breathalysers winning the “Red Dot Award: Product Design”.

Red Dot has been an internationally recognised design award since its inception in 1955 and is recognised as a quality label for excellent product design. Past prize-winners include Siemens in 1995, Apple in 2001, BMW in 2007, LG in 2008, Porsche in 2012, Lenovo in 2013, Bose in 2014; and Dell in 2015.

Designed in the UK, the AlcoSense Pro & Ultra are the culmination of 3 years R&D and reflects AlcoSense’s values of simplicity, functionality and precision. The result is a breathalyser with near Police level accuracy and several patented innovations which bring a level of performance & ease of use previously unseen in the industry.

The product’s external design also impressed the jury by reflecting these values in a refined the external form with precise split lines and slide action with hidden mechanism, invisible battery compartment and backlit mouthpiece hole for use in low light conditions."

The Guardian Breathalyzer Review

"Designed in the UK, both breathalysers offer levels of accuracy, reliability and consistency that we as consumers have not been able to access until now."

"The units have several excellent features. They are pre-loaded with all the different limits in every country, so if travelling in Europe, for instance, you wouldn’t be caught out by different levels when crossing borders. Also, they feature an ‘estimated time until sober’ with an alarm that alerts you to re-test again when it is likely you will be safe to drive. The AlcoSense Pro costs £129.99 (£149.99 from February 2016) and the Ultra is £249.99 – which isn’t cheap but considering the alternatives could be a bargain."

"The most accurate over-the-counter device currently available...Even compared to the hugely complicated static devices found in police stations (worth upwards of £10,000), the reliability and accuracy of the AlcoSense Ultra is hugely impressive, partly thanks to a new software calibration technique that prevents the device from under-reading.However,it is the day-to-day usability of the AlcoSense Ultra that should be its main selling point"

"...the device enables you to select literally any drink drive limit from around the world (from Australia to the UAE), making it the perfent partner for cross-country road trips,"

'Combined with its stylish and ergonomic design (the blowhole, for example, lights up for ease of use in the dark) the AlcoSense Ultra more than justifies its price making it a must-have for those who truly value their licence.."

I have had a number of alcosense breathalysers in the past but this really is a masterpiece. It’s extremely easy to use and far more accurate than any other breathalyser I have used. The blow meter is also very useful. On previous breathalysers I think I was blowing too hard and they always over read my alcohol limit. Can thoroughly recommend even though it is on the pricey side.

We have had a number of the Alcosense lower level models before and been delighted so decided to buy a top of the range one when we wanted a replacement. It's superb. Very easy to use and very accurate results so far as we can tell (we have both tested it after consuming varying amounts of alcohol at home) So if we go out and I have one drink I will test myself before driving to ensure I am well under.

Seems like a great product so far! Though MAJORLY under-publicised!

by Bulk Bobson on 24/01/2018

Bought this for my girlfriend for Christmas. She's been wanting one for a long time but couldn't justify the spend. Managed to nab it for £200 on Black Friday weekend.I was very wary about buying this as there is limited information on the specific product (slightly more on their other products). Some reviews I questioned whether they were genuine, and seemed to appear on multiple sites, and no matter how hard I looked, I couldn't find proof of the Reddot Design Award anywhere other than the Alcosense website. That being said, as far as we can tell it's a great bit of kit. Yes it's a little pricey, and whilst my girlfriend admitted I could well have gone for one of their cheaper products, she also accepted at the same time that she would feel much more comfortable trusting this one in comparison. On the one hand, you can only take their word for it that it is legit because you can't exactly compare it to a police Breathalyzer yourself. That being said, we have tested it a few times after having a couple of drinks (READ THE INSTRUCTIONS, using it too soon after drinking can damage the sensor, and the alcohol may not be completely in your blood stream), and readings appear to be accurate when comparing to how you would assume your levels to be according to both units consumed and time since last drink. The breathcoach is a MUST. My girlfriend's got it spot on now, but I still struggle with it, and know if I had one of the models that lacks this feature I would never get a reading! Very useful indeed.Had a few issues in downloading the software updates too due to warnings (addressed on their website) that the file isn't commonly downloaded.IN A NUTSHELL - seems like a great product. Blowcoach is brilliant, the case and mouthpieces it comes with are brilliant, and we feel we trust what it tells us. Price is a little steep aye. The look and feel of this product is great. It DOES NOT feel cheap in any way.WHY ONLY FOUR STARS? - The difficulty in finding information on the product before buying made me very wary for the amount of money. Help us out Alcosense! Publicise this more, have more interviews with papers and WELL KNOWN websites + publications. Show us some proof of the Red Dot Design Award and try and get more video reviews etc. Work out the issues with the firmware file not being trusted with browsers and Virus Software.Otherwise. Great!

Well worth it if you need a good reliable unit

by SO8 on 14/12/2017

I already had the Alcosense Pro but wanted the most accurate one I could get. I was concerned the Pro model was under reading but there are so many variable's attached to drinking and the human body it is often difficult to know where you stand 'drinking'. I always get a taxi on the night but this was bought for the morning after - just to make sure. I drink, I lose my job - so the cost of this unit made sense. Yes, I am paranoid having two but one stays at home and one in the car for when I am staying away for a night or two. Both units read effectively the same so I am confident they are both working ok. Would i pay extra again for the dearer one - bearing in mind it is £100 more. Well, yes, as it comes with a load of tubes and a case which adds to the cost of the cheaper unit. It had the full size fuel cell but seemingly the Pro unit as opposed to Ultra is, to me at least, as accurate. If anything the cheaper unit over read slightly which I don't have an issue with at all !The build is good. The display to tell you how hard to blow and for how long is excellent and the unit starts up quickly. The Pro takes a lot longer to analyse the alcohol in your breath compared to the Ultra which is extremely quick. The Ultra also shows a zero reading where the cheaper unit just says 'below 9' if using the UK measurement of alcohol/breath levels.I am very pleased and have come to this from the old £60 Alcosense model which finally died last year.My job is vital to me and I think to prevent inadvertently driving the morning after whilst still over the limit this unit is worth the money. Expensive, yes, but how much is your job worth ?

Looks and feels great...not sure why results vary so much from elite?

by Amazon Customer on 12/06/2017

Previously had an alcosense elite and decided to upgrade to the Ultra. Unit looks and feels fantastic and seems to work exceptionally well...what's great is it's very easy to use and doesn't need to be set up with diluted alcohol like the elite. Only slight concern for me is that the readings are very different...I've been using them both at the same time and they do seem to vary quite a bit so not sure which one is accurate...assume it's the Ultra?

AlcoSense says: If you have had the Elite for some time and not had it re-calibrated this is most likely the reason for the variation. You should have your breathalyser calibrated once a year, the longer it goes without calibration the more the reading may drift.

by By A customer on 04/06/2017

Unfortunately I had to return this product as I do not trust what it was telling me.I carried out some tests (where I did not drive) just to see how it compared with what I was expecting, and in all cases used the product in accordance with their instructions. One hour after drinking two pints of 3.8% beer my reading was 0.37 against a limit of 0.8.An hour later I consumed half a bottle of 13.5% wine and tested again an hour later, and the reading was 0.5; again apparently within the limit.I contacted the manufacturer who said the readings seemed light and to send the unit back for testing. They confirmed that the unit was working correctly and on that basis I returned it for crediting.

I recomend alcosense products and think every one that drives should have one, youl be surprised at the results the day after a night out.
Thank you alcosense for your existing customer care if only other companies would follow your standards

Excellent piece of kit. Just need to get used to how the mouthpiece is inserted. Also for the price of the machine it would have been good if a case could have been included in the price- even if moderate cost was added to the purchase price.
Otherwise a very sound investment

AlcoSense says: Thanks for the positive review. We noted you said that you didn't get a case, this is included with the Ultra free of charge. If this was missing we're really sorry, please call us on 0800 195 0088 with your unit serial number and we'll sort that out for you straight away.

Why Risk Your Licence When Alcosense is Available

by Diehard on 28/10/2016

I originally purchased the Alcosense Lite, then after watching a top gear programme I purchased the Alcosense Elite which I thought was superior. Then when Scotland reduced the alcohol limit I opted to splash out on the Ultra. Personally I think this is one piece of motoring kit every motorist should not be without., if you value your licence and like the odd tipple now and again why risk losing your licence just for the sake of spending a few pounds on any of the Alcosense range, if you can afford it go for the top of the range sensor you wont regret it.

I am really pleased with my Ultra it seems to be accurate as I tried it against another make, and it is very easy to use.

Worked reliably for 18 months. It gave believable and reproducible results. I had it re-calibrated at 12 months as per instructions, broke at 6 months later, fix under the two year warrantee free of charge, then broke again a few months later. I really like it but wished it had lasted more than two years. I replaced it with a cut down commercial unit at three times the price requiring 6 monthly calibration, however, I believe this is the best in this price range. With all “tech” it has a limited life time.

AlcoSense Ultra - good for keeping employees in check

by Dave Rogers on 02/02/2016

The AlcoSense Ultra was bought to replace a {BRAND NAME REMOVED BY ALCOSENSE} breathalyser which had died. In comparison to our old breathalyser the AlcoSense Ultra is excellent. So much easier to use and seems very accurate - although I don't now have anything to compare it to. I own a same day courier company and we use it for testing the drivers before giving them the keys each day - as we're a small company I use it at the weekend sometimes and it's been great for that too! For testing other people it's easy to tell if the person being tested is trying to mess with the test as it shows you on screen how they're blowing so there's no excuse for throwing a test by trying to trick the breathalyser. We have set our own company limit which is half the UK limit and this is very easy to change in the unit settings. Design is rugged so I think it'll last well. No negatives so far. I would recommend it.
