Police Level Accuracy

Patented crystals inside the tube change colour from yellow to green in the presence of alcohol. The further up the graduated tube the green colour appears the greater the concentration of alcohol the user has in their system. As the green colour change touches each line, you’ve passed each limit. Simple!

Precise breath sample measurements

AlcoSense Single Use Breathalysers use a blow bag to make sure the right volume of deep-lung air passes through the tester. Too little air equals a falsely low reading, too much equals a falsely high reading. This is approved many others are not. I have bought this product over the years to comply with French law when driving abroad. My son lives in Austria so we make many trips to see him. Generally we get a year of shelf life and that's all you can ask for.

Personally I think this is a stupid law. Driving in France is bad enough, who'd want to add to the migraine by drinking! If you're drinking socially of an evening and your a tourist you're hardly going to drive. If you're passing through the Country you're hardly going to wait for the alcohol to get into your system, which can be anywhere from 30 mins to an hour or so, so before you self test, ensure you know your metabloic rate. Stupid stupid law. As for the product I can't comment as I haven't even opened up the pretty box. The accuracy, I guess, would depend on YOU using the device at just the right time depending on how quickly you absord alcohol? Stupid Stupid Law. I only carry the breathalysers, because I might frequently speed and get stopped by the police and don't want another fine for not carrying this. Remember each breathalyser is a one shot deal. If you're a drink driver there are electronic breathalysers that you can use many many times which would help eliminate the guess work. Just keep testing yourself every 15 minutes after consumption. Easier not to drink drive!

Good product, but expiry date is only 15 months after purchase, sellers of this product should be forced to give a minimum expiry of at least 2 years, and stop expecting the customer to have to put up with old unsold stock. This is something you have to have by law in France, ok for one trip on holiday, but I am expecting to be a regular traveler soon, so will by of the shelf in France in future, at least you can see the expiry before you buy.

I am completely T-Total and never drink alcohol, however as French law dictates, I'm required to carry said breathalysers whilst driving in France and have bought the required kit to save a hefty fine if found not to carry said items.I assume that they are up to the required standard,indeed these are the units used by the French Police; the package is neat and attractive and expires in August 2019 !What more can I say ?

I chose this product becaue it is produced one of only two manufacturers in the world to have passed the strict NF certification. It replaces previous product from the same company that is now time expired. I have not had to use the breathalyser yet but i will try one of the out of date ones ( end of Feb 18) to see how accurate they are, and report back if they do not live up to expectations. Thay may be more expensive than other versions on the market, but maybe its wortht he extra for peace of mind!

Firstly i want to be on the right side of the law when driving in France, so i want the right products that i need when i'm over there.This is a NF certified product and so there should be no quibbling by the police or from me, when i produce this kit from my vehicle, i know i i'vebrought a top product at a great price, so far ( touch wood) i have not had to use one yet, but it's nice too know that i have a certified product at handshould things go wrong.

Cannot comment on how accurate hey are as I don't intend being in a position to have to use one, but item is as described and was delivered quickly. These arrived very quickly and in time for our trip to France. Thankfully I didn't have call to use them, but was confident I wouldn't have upset any Police officer, had the need arisen. loads of cheaper breathalyser's online but are no good as these do not comply with the french police guidelines.got to be marked with the nf seal.the old addage apply's here you get what you pay for.french police so strict would'nt risk taking the cheap breathalyzer over to france .bought this product and the difference in quality of product and instructions for use are noticeable.i go over to france often.and only carry this product in my glove box.better safe than sorry.highly recommended

This arrived promptly and in perfect condition. I have yet to use it as I have also purchased the AlcoSense Pro electronic breathalyser which is an excellent product. Once back from France (where you are obliged to carry the NF devices in the car) I will try the unit out and compare results to the Pro version. (I am aware that results vary from one breath to the next).Having worked with Breathalysers for many years I am aware of the difficulties inherent in getting type approval by government organisations. The fact that AlcoSense has achieved this says a great deal about their R&D and Quality Assurance processes.

I've used an alco-sense for many years and as I spend time in France had my model calibrated to French limits. So now restrict my drinking to to a small glass of wine. I previously had two mandatory breathalysers from a different manufacturer and upon expiry date tested them against my calibrated alco-sense and they were difficult to read.So I have changed to these in the hope that they too will not be used in anger.

Because I drive a lot on the Continent and it is a legal requirement under French law to carry such a device and I may be required to take a test in order to satisfy the authorities. It's reassuring to know that this equipment complies with French NF standards and is not one of the many fakes which may be on the market. My advice is to invest in the genuine article.

Great product I am sure, but not needed in France, Yes there is a law, BUT In January 2013 – the French government officially said that the introduction of a fine for not having an unused breathalyzer with you has been postponed indefinitely. Google drive France breathalyser.
AlcoSense says: The item is still required under law in France. The fine has been abolished but, like you high vis jacket etc you still must carry it by law.

I will never know how good, or otherwise, this product is, until and unless I have to use it. However, it appears to fulfil all the French legal requirements, it was delivered quickly and it has a decent period of validity, so it will be possible to keep it for at least the next two or three trips over to France (always assuming we do not need to use it sooner). If you want to feel confident that you will not run into unexpected problems through not complying with French law, this is well worth buying.

Many will know that, whilst it is a legal requirement to have available two of these breathalysers, the fine for not having them has been suspended indefinitely. My own view is that for such a small amount of money it is worth having them so as not to annoy the French Police unnecessarily if you do happen to be stopped for a spot check.

Every year when travelling to France by car I have to check I have breathalysers in the car (a French Requirement) normally buy them at Halford but this time thought i would use Amazon especially when I saw the manufacturer selling them, on their website they stated a 2 year warranty , normally the ones I seem to buy at Halfords don't last that long and I have to renew annually. They arrived and I was disappointed to see they expired in 2018, I contacted the company received an apology and by return a new order with breathalysers lasting to June 2019. I note that the information here suggests that these devices are still required. My information differs a little. Although the law requiring them is still in force, there is No Penalty for not carrying them. The French government could not lose face by dropping their idea from law, so second best was just to remove the penalties and so save face. Do your own research of course, but don't waste your money until you have checked it out for yourself.

I hired a car in France a couple of weeks ago from Eurocar, I asked the agent if it was equipped for French roads with warning triangles etc and he assured me it was, I then asked him if there were breathalysers in the car as "required by French law". He said there is no such law in France and there never has been such a law, it was merely a proposal that has now been dropped, so there never will be such a law. It is an urban myth perpetuated by Halfrauds and others that these are required under French law, the French are intelligent people who would never pass such a stupid law, so if this is why you were planning to buy these do not waste your money.

No taxi ... And when you leave and fail you're own test .. You may as well go back and have a few more ... When you're done you're done.. Hung for a sheep as a lamb... OK at a push. A bit fiddly to use, requiring you to inflate a bag and then use the bag to blow your breath into the tube. It can be a bit difficult to read with confidence. The demarcation between green and orange can be a bit unclear. I've used one of the electronic breathalysers and they seem worth paying the extra for.

Now being a heavy drinker, I never know when i'm smashed. Usually I have to rely on the attendance of the local Constabulary to confirm this or I wake up in the local A&E Department with blunt force trauma to my face. This product, however, lets me know how ripped I am. When i'm out on the sauce, all I have to do is blow into one of these things and it tells me whether or not I should keep drinking, go to a club, get a kebab or partake of some sort of anti social behaviour. Be warned though as mistakes are easy to make. I attended a stag do in Ibiza and was unable to distinguish between this product and a straw, which I mistakenly blew into. As nothing came up, I continued drinking and woke up on a fishing trawler handcuffed to a bearded sailor called Silas dressed as a ballerina.

Arrived in good time. I'm not too sure of the legal implications of not having these breathalysers with you in France, but I'd rather not give the French plods an excuse to have a whinge and impose a fine or worse. They state they're compliant with all the rules and regulations; however, a few weeks ago my brother-in-law and I tried an old pack of these that had run past its Use By date: they both indicated we were legal to drive, even after a belly-full or two of beer. Now I appreciate the inaccurate readings may have had more to do with them being about 6 months past their Use By dates, they were still forgiving even after over 6 pints of bitter.

Expiry date is october 2017 on the one i recieved.The fine for not carrying one of these in France apperently is â¬11 (and is allegedly not enforced) however these cost a couple of quid and for peace of mind it is worth it.

I honestly thought these were mini Alco-Pops and thought they would be handy for a sly slurp - turns out they are useless and only suitable for making sure you are not going to maim or kill an innocent human being because you have no regard for anyone but yourself and enjoy devastating the families of your victims and your own, have a penchant for prison food and recycling cars!Guess it will be useful for being responsible particularly when abroad and they can stay in my glove box until their expiration which is about two years time.

Well, there's been a lot of confusion over the past 5 year about the need to carry these. At the current time there's no fine so I won't be bothering again until France has sorted itself out in this respect. Ordered a set of one-shot breathalysers and Alocosense's basic electronic product. The electronic breathalyser is good and seems to work reliably. Haven't yet had the 'chance' to use any of the one-shot breathalysers specified for use in France. However, was not initially very impressed with delivery. Having paid for next-day delivery, was then (i.e. after they had the money) sent an email apologising for the fact the electronic tester was out of stock . On complaining that the order may as well be cancelled as we were leaving for France shortly and needed the one-shot breathalysers asap, they did arrange for the one-shot testers to be sent by post and they did arrive in time, so that was OK and we appreciated the effort to get us the vital bits on time. The electronic tester duly arrived a couple of weeks later. As delivery was thus in two lots, I appreciate that Alcosense had paid more than they bargained for on delivery costs. However, I had not get the next day delivery I had paid for and they did not offer a refund of the premium delivery fee, so it seemed a bit chaotic from a 'world class' customer service point of view. Subsequently, pleased to report that once they had taken on board the problem AlcoSense responded very positively to make amends, with postage refund and a batch of spare tubes. As this was only a small order to start with I was impressed with the trouble they took to make good. Now more than pleased to join their large group of unqualified fans.

"I haven't actually used the single use AlcoSense breathalyser yet (fortunately as this would only happen if pulled over by the gendarmerie when driving through France!) but I'm a big fan of the Elite AlcoSense unit which I tend to use the morning after a slightly more sociable night than usual! I am then comfortable driving if it gives me the all clear or, on the ocasisons I have registered as either over the limit or on the edge, I have delayed getting into the car until the readig is ""lo"". Part of my worry is the risk of having a minor accident in the car - because of someone else's daft driving, getting breathalysed and my insurance being invalidated, not because there was anything wrong with my driving but because the trace of alcohol left in my blood system lets the insurance company off the hook (and quite rightly so) and . Most of us know when we're really not safe to drive but this little gadget takes the guesswork out of the morning after when sometimes you might feel fine but the reading tells you otherwise."

I first got a couple of these units for France in case we got stopped on our way down to Italy last year. After trying one while away ,i found i WAS over the limit one morning after a heavy dinner and a bottle of wine. I didnt drive till next day, my wife had the pleasure of driving through Switzerland ,and i just had to look. Bit of a result realy. Wont travel without them now both here and abroad. Pity they dont make one for Europe that is'nt a one use throw away.Might be a bit more money but would'nt have to be replaced.

When driving in France, you need to carry a Breathalyser with you. There's a debate to weather you need them or not, but I found them a good reminder, not to risk the stupidity of drink driving, especially the next ,orning. These are handy to use, very compack, especailly when on a motorcycle and good value for money. I think it's best to buy them before you go, becasue the price on baord ship, is a lot higher.

Did the job, didn't have to use them at all through France on my trip to Rome last year (the apparently notorious Gendarmerie couldn't have been less interested in my travels) though so dunno if they work - I just bought the pair to tick a box and not get ripped off on the ferry really. These were definitely cheaper. Saved them for this year's Europe trip to Sweden - although you must check the expiry dates when you plan to use them as they do expire.

Nothing wrong with product as far as I can tell, but haven't had to use it (yet).The problem is the idea that France has become like this, when police everywhere else seem to be funded well enough to have their own breathalysers. What with the insane motorway tolls on top (arguably an illegal tax on visitors), France clearly wants people to avoid the place! Soon you'll have to wear your underpants on the outside, so they can check they're clean.

I bought this as this is compulsory to have in the car when driving through France. I never had to use this so I don't know if they work. Only a fool would drink and drive. It lives in a dark recess in the boot of our car.

I am not a heavy drinker but was going out for a few parties and needed to drive the very next morning so I got the test to make by Mrs J White on 07/02/2015

I got these for the Christmas period because some one I know got stopped the next day and failed the breath test. He had not been drinking heavy he shared a bottle of wine with a meal and had a few beer's. Got up next morning thinking he was OK to drive got stopped and failed the BT. I am not a heavy drinker but was going out for a few parties and needed to drive the very next morning so I got the test to make sure that I would be ok I am happy to say when used they did not even register but it gave me piece of mind to know I was OK to drive. Best to be safe than very sorry and for what they cost its not worth the risk.

Both times I have tried it the crystals just turned a darker yellow no sign of green which indicates no alcohol or 'wet test' but it doesn't say what 'wet test' is. Does this mean they are faulty tubes? I'd be very surprised if I'm under the limit considering how much I drank last night.

But you won't get a fine.Why?1 March 2012 - from "1 July 2012" drivers must carry a breathalyser. Enforced from 1 November 2012 and anyone stopped after that date who fails to produce a breathalyser when requested will receive an on the spot fine of 11.October 2012 - the French government announced that the fine of 11 - has been postponed from 1 November 2012 to 1 March 2013.January 2013 - the French government announced that the fine of 11 - has been postponed indefinitely.So theoretically you need to carry a breathalyser when driving in France but no fine.Hope this helps.

Cheap and cheerful. Served its purpose well - needed them as part of French driving regulations . Definitely cheaper then buying from AA or other car shops. Also a good reminder that drink and driving tolerance levels are lower in France than the UK. Tip if driving in France have your insurance details and regulatory bits to hand - not packed in the bottom case in the jam packed boot!! :)

If your testing to see if somebody has had anything to drink (at all) it wont show up any amount of reading- only shows up if over a limit, other tests show if there is any in the persons system, so even if they are under the limit you know if they at least had some. wouldnt recommend.

The Alcosense is easy to use and can be left in the car for any unexpected occasions. I often partake in several ales on a Friday and Saturday night, carrying on right through Sunday, until I am a weary, emotional, downtrodden, self-loathing shell of a man on Monday morning. The breathalysers arrived quickly and were suitably packed. The box contains two tubes, each wrapped in its own bag, so they seem to be complete. Cannot comment on the product - hope never to use them. Just have to pack them in the car, along with the warning triangle, the hi-viz vests, the bulb set (complete), the first aid kit, the fire extinguisher, the insurance certificate, the spare engine, the 'get out of jail free' card, etc, etc.....

I liked the French authority approval.The main reason for not liking the product was that as i am slightly colour blind / colour defective, I can't tell the difference between the yellow and the green. there just isn't enough colour variation from its dry state to the activated colour. Rendering it useless to me. There needs to be a much greater colour difference between the dry crystals and the activated crystals.

I had a skin full Friday night, over a bottle of wine. Saturday morning at 7.30am I decided to test if I was ok to drive, I was fairly sure I wasn't. Broke out the kit (it was in date, Oct 2014) and followed the instructions to the letter. Result was no alcohol in my system. I called BS on that and decided to take the dogs for a walk and not risk it.That night, right after the last glass of another bottle of wine (yes I drink too much!) I tested the second Breathalyser, results of that one was I had alcohol in my system (no s*** Sherlocke)but I was ok to drive.These little suckers may be required in France, but DO NOT rely on them to tell you whether you are ok to drive or not.

There has been some confusion over the start of the law but I don't want to take the chance and at the price you'd be daft not to carry them when motoring in France. Although it is advised you have one in France, my French colleagues tell me no one bothers in France and it was never made law. January 2013 - Drivers in France have been required to carry a self-test breathalyser since July 2012 with enforcement by fines originally planned for 1 November but subsequently postponed to 1 March 2013. Now the French government has announced that the implementation of the sanction (fine) for drivers not carrying a breathalyser - a fine of 11 - has been postponed indefinitely.So you are still required to carry a self-test breathalyser when driving in France but there is no current legislation demanding a fine for non-compliance.Go figure!

I don't like this product purely because I HAD to buy it in order to travel through France!I was never stopped by the police - therefore they are still in their packet waiting for the next time I have to go across europe.How do you rate these if you use them anyway?Blew in it, got arrested/didn't get arrested - no Idea how accurate they are.

So we bought these as it is a twin pack, because if you only have one and the police ask you to use it, you are then illegal straightaway if you do not have another one! Just received two individual breathalysers in sweetie-wrapper type packaging - not in boxed pack as displayed on picture. This arrived within a couple of days, most fortunate for us as we booked a very-last-minute trip to France.However, I hope I never have to give a product review, as I hope we never get stopped by les agents de police. Not that we drink and drive, you understand! The main reason I chose this product from among all similar ones is that it is sold as being approved by the French police, and that there are two in the pack. You're supposed to have at least one, so if you get stopped by the police and have to do a breath test, you must have another spare to remain legal. (Although, French red tape being what it is, they have still not passed a law that says they can actually fine you for not having a breathalyser in the car! So you must carry at least one but if you don't, they can't fine you - do they give you a ticking off instead?!! That would certainly improve my French!)Will update if I ever have to use it. By the way, it does show an expiry date on the box, mine is April 2015.

Before you read further I have only anecdotely tested them. and I think they are calibrated to the French limit rather than UK limit.However you need to carry one for driving in France and to avoid the "Can I drive after this drink vs I cannot drive if I use the breathalyser" paradox, I thought I would be best getting two. Plus if you are travelling as a group in more than one vehicle, someone will forget and you can give them the spare.They are cheaper here than Halfords and will save you having to sell and organ to buy one on the ferry.On returning to the UK I decided to test them and used one after 3 pints of 4.8% bitter it gave a positive result. I tested the second the following morning, whilst I still fell squiffy. That also gave a positive reading.But in short you are best not drinking if you are driving, and waiting till you feel good and well the next day.

You simply have to prove to a policemean that breathes alcohol fumes all over you that you have not been partaking of that drug - how? This is apparently the accepted technical answer. If you drive in a sobre state on any highway you have nothing to fear except that you would be seen as antisocial when visiting vine growing districts and not tasting their products! Seriously though it's a very good idea to allow an instant test of sobriety for those who are tempted to break the Pledge. I have not tested it but will carry it in the automobile at all times.

The French have updated the legislation on the Breathalyser :-Decree No. 2013-180 of 28 February 2013 amending Article R. 233-1 of the Highway CodeStates " Notice: every driver is required to have a breathalyzer in his vehicle. While maintaining this obligation, the decree removes the penalty should apply, as of 1 March 2013, in case of default of possession of the breathalyser. "In other words it's still a legal requirement to have one but the penalty for not having one has been suspended indefinitely. So no spot fines.

Bought these to comply with French Law - a friend of mine was pulled over about 1km outside Dunquerque a few weeks ago by a French police check. They seemed to be focussing on tourist vehicles. He had a couple in the glove box so no worries. Best to buy a 2-pack because you are required to have one in the vehicle at all times - so if you only have 1 - and you have to blow into it - you become in automatic violation of the legal requirement! Kepp a check on the expiry dates - to comply with the law, they have to be current.I don't know if its still the case, but a few months ago it was hard to buy these in France, so get them before you go!

I lived in France until October of last year. The law became effective for all motorists to carry a kit from November 2012. It MUST have the NF compliance, many don't and totally useless for compliance. I know from experience it's not easy to find in France except at larger supermarkets. Best to avoid the high prices charged on cross channel ferries, IF they have not sold out! Buy at at a very reasonable price, like this product, before you go. Remember, the French limit for blood/alcohol level is HALF that of the UK. That's one small glass (125ml) of wine only! I bought it in the UK having driven through France without a pair on board - must be at least two in the vehicle - one could land you with a fine. They appear to give a clear indication of your alcohol level and would be enough to stop you driving even if slightly effected by last nights pints or glasses.To all those complaining about the French law, if you don't think you are ever over the limit, fine! The law is there to protect you from others who may unknowingly be, and Â£5 every 2 years is immaterial for anyone who can afford to take driving holidays in France. The sooner we have a similar law in the UK the better.

Once again France is inivative in it's approach to road safety though why we should pay for breathaliser kit's I'll never know. I don't drink so it's more wasted money for me. I can understand the need for Hi Vis jackets, First Aid kits, warning triangles and fire extinguishers but this is a little over the top and it's now against the law if you don't have 2 breathalisers. These were the cheapest that I could find and are perfect for the job so Amazon comes to the reascue again.I suggest people read the items that you need to carry before going to France etc and finally, a speed warning, the warnings that the French used to have just before a speed trap are coming down and more cameras are going in, so beware.

When you've had a drink or two you don't want to mess with the local law enforcement officers in France but its no good buying two because when you've used one, you only have one left and the law says you've got to have two, so you've broken the law. Buy four and then you are safe, as long as you are sober, the cost of getting another pack in France will be more than this anyway - and a lot of places are still waiting for stock. And if you remember them during the crossing, the shock of finding out how much they are on the boat will drive you to drink.Actually, don't get these, even though they are the best price you'll find, take the train instead and then you can have a little drink along the way!

Not much to say about this product, as everyone else has I have also purchased this as it is now a requirement when travelling to France, not at all sure about the science behind it's accuracy. Seems to me a very strange thing to take with you, surely if you going to drink and drive and break the law you are not going to bother to use this.Still have given it a reasonable rating as it covers the necessary legalities and was cheaper than purchasing at eurotunnel or on the ferry crossing. Someone is making a fortune, especially as they have a use by date! Dropped a star as I shall never use it as I never drink and drive, it will be thrown away at expiry date and a new one purchased as required. Money down the drain for me and I resent being penalised for nought.

What can I say other than it's an essential for travel to France after November 1st 2012, the result if not in possession will be a ~Â£9 fine (based on a Â£- rate of 1.2).I bought mine now to avoid any rush on them when people realise that it's a legal requirement for the seasonal booze cruises in November & December.All in all Â£4,50 is a small price to pay to stay legal over there and avoid any hassle with the French authorities & Amazon is a lot cheaper than Halfords.

Very convenient package containing 2 breathalyser units.This is necessary because if you get stopped by the French police and are breathelysed, then with only one breathelyser unit in the car which has been used, you cannot legally continue your journey as you have no breathelyser on board! A real catch 22 issue!I just hope that these units are genuinely approved by the French authorities. I will only find out if I am checked!

With the new legislation all drivers must carry breathalyzers if driving through France. We recently sailed from Dover (end of August 2012) and the shop at the ferry terminal did not have any of these which surprised me and made me relieved that we had already purchased ours. There appears to be confusion about why you have to have them. My understanding is that if you have had a drink in France, you must test yourself before driving, so that you know if you are above or below the limit. If stopped by the police you must then produce the breathalyzer to show that you have tested yourself and are below the limit. It is not enough just to be carrying them. Should we get stopped in France, as we do travel to the continent regularly then I will update this review!! Happy travels :)

I ordered the item because it is now mandatory to carry the kit when driving in France. I was lucky as it was the last in stock. However it did not arrive and Autokit gave me a refund. It eventually turned up over 3 weeks later, after my trip. I told Autokit but they refused to take payment, citing my honesty. We agreed I would give the amount to charity. I have not had occasion to use the produce but it appears to be exactly what I needed and ordered. I will take it on the next trip though I hope not to need it! They should have new stocks by now.

The Alcosense twin breathalyser arrived by return of post, and was undamaged upon arrival. I cannot fault the supplier on an excellent service. Happily, despite driving in France for a week I have not been required to prove my sobriety, so I cannot comment on the accuracy of the device. The pack has a two year expiry date, so it pays to loan your pack to a friend, if they wish to drive in France. I wonder how many people will feel compelled to test themselves before driving!

A number of reviewers have pondered the great existential question posed by this product. How can we know if it works unless we try it? But if we try it then it can no longer be used and its existence becomes unnecessary. It was Group-Captain Knob-Gag, steward at the West Penge Conservative Club, who came up with the answer. I was able to test his novel solution on a recent trip across La Manche. After using a breathalyser each evening to check whether I was in any fit state to inflict myself upon the gallic road system, I followed his advice and broke it open, retaining the green crystals contained therein. When I returned to these shores, I had a goodly collection of said crystals. Mixed with a generous measure of Barrettines methylated spirit, they made a most acceptable alternative to green Chartreuse.

We don't have a choice. New law in France will require motorists to carry these breathalisers. Obviously the items can't be tested unless you buy more, or get pulled over! So, here's hoping.... They are a little expensive in relation to the French guidelines indicating they wouldn't cost more than about Â£2 each, so it remains to be seen if they are easily available at channel ports and within France and at what cost.
